Description

This is a *hidasuki* (fire-cord) large tea cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, a popular young artist who was a live-in apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. The piece was fired by slowly and carefully raising the temperature as if to coax the clay, resulting in a magnificent *mogusa* (mugwort-colored) clay texture that exudes an elegant charm. The splendid Momoyama-style *hidasuki* produced by an electric kiln—a technique loved by his mentor, Sozan Kaneshige—shines brilliantly against the *mogusa* clay. The form possesses a unique balance characteristic of hand-coiled pottery, and the rounded texture with subtle undulations perfectly complements the warm scenery of the *hidasuki*. The base is crafted with a sturdy, thick wall that shifts the center of gravity downward, providing excellent stability despite the cup's large, rounded shape. Paper box
Diameter 10.3cm × 10.3cm × Height 10.0cm Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father, who loved ceramics, he aspired to pursue pottery and, after graduating from high school in 1989, studied under the father-and-son team of Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige to learn the craft. After seven years of apprenticeship, he built his own *noborigama* (climbing kiln) in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 to establish his independence, successfully firing his first kiln the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since. In 1999, he was selected for the "Exhibition of Northern Confectionery Vessels I Want to Use," and in 2002, he was selected for the first time for the "Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Forms."
