Description
This is a *hidaski* (fire-cord) sake cup with a *warikodai* (split foot) from Yoshinobu Morimoto's latest exhibition. It is part of a series that recreates the style of ancient Karatsu and Oku-Korai pottery—the period that began with the so-called "tea bowl wars"—using Bizen clay. Created in accordance with the Karatsu production style, the pieces are made rapidly in large quantities, after which only those of exceptional quality are carefully selected for release. Despite the immense technical skill involved, the pieces possess a gentle expression devoid of any sense of artifice. The work recreates the *warikodai* (split foot) of the Oku-Korai (Joseon dynasty) world that so captivated Morimoto himself, and the contrast between the powerfully flared foot and the gracefully spreading rim is magnificent. The *hidaski* scenery, achieved using a specially formulated clay, has a lovely, soft texture reminiscent of Japanese *washi* paper.
Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 7.9cm x 7.6cm x Height 5.3cm
