Description

This Bizen tea cup is the work of Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto, a master artisan who created numerous masterpieces with peerless, god-like skill. Formed using exceptional wheel-throwing techniques and fired under rigorous temperature control, the cup possesses a shape that is thin and supple, yet imbued with a dignified presence. The rim, in particular, is thrown so thin that it is hard to believe human hands could shape pottery clay with such delicacy. The vibrant red *hidasuki* (fire-cord) markings are concentrated on the front, creating a striking contrast that perfectly complements the sharp impression of the vessel. Original signed wooden box (shiho-zan style)
Diameter 7.7cm × Diameter 7.6cm × Height 8.0cm Toshu Yamamoto (1906–1994, born in Imbe, Bizen City) entered the world of ceramics in 1921 and established his own kiln in 1933. He later refined his skills under the tutelage of Kyoto ceramic artist Yaichi Kusube. Following the war, he deepened his friendships with figures such as Rosanjin Kitaoji and Isamu Noguchi. Renowned as "Toshu of the Potter's Wheel" for his superior throwing skills, he created delicate works and established a reputation as a master of tea ceramics, particularly through his enthusiastic production of tea caddies. He was designated as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) in 1987. In 1992, he held the exhibition "Journey of the Six Ancient Kilns: Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto."
