Description
This is a Bizen mortar-style spouted bowl from Yoshinobu Morimoto's new exhibition. It belongs to a series inspired by the Muromachi period, when Bizen ware swept across Japan as everyday utility ware, captivated by a powerful worldview that prioritizes functionality. Reflecting the characteristics of that era, the piece is created using the coil-building technique where ropes of clay are stacked and joined on a potter's wheel, leaving the wheel marks and seams visible to create an unadorned, rustic form. It was fired by being stacked in a pile without consideration for a "front" or specific aesthetic placement, resulting in a magnificent clay surface with a rich, moist, and primitive texture. While retaining the compelling intensity of a mortar—such as the rim design that accurately captures the utility-focused spirit of the Muromachi period—it has been adapted into a sake server.
