Description

This is a newly fired Bizen beer tumbler by Iwao Kaneshige, who was born and raised into the prestigious Kaneshige family and continues to diligently refine his craft in the kiln passed down through generations from the great Toyo Kaneshige and Michiaki Kaneshige. These beer tumblers feature a simple finish that highlights the raw quality of the clay that Master Iwao favors, and each piece is uniquely playful, with designs ranging from those with handles to those with spouted rims. They were fired in a spot within the kiln that receives kiln-transmutation (yohen), which is noted on the box inscription. Because of this, the artist used a deeply carved "I" pottery seal to ensure it would not be obscured by falling ash. Signed wooden box (double-slatted lid)
Diameter 6.6cm x 6.2cm x Height 12.6cm Iwao Kaneshige is the eldest son of Michiaki Kaneshige. Born and raised into a family of Bizen ware artists, he developed a passion for ceramics and chose to follow the path of a potter. After honing his skills under the guidance of the Kaneshige family, he became independent in 1995 and held his first solo exhibition at a gallery in Okayama. He has exhibited works in the Kaneshige Family Exhibition in 1999 and 2001.
