Description

This is a brand new Bizen beer tumbler, fresh from the kiln of Iwao Kaneshige, who was born and raised in the prestigious Kaneshige family and has been diligently honing his craft at the kiln where his predecessors, the great Toyo Kaneshige and Michiaki Kaneshige, fired their works. These beer tumblers feature a simple finish that highlights the raw quality of the clay that Master Iwao favors, and each piece is uniquely playful, with some featuring handles or katakuchi-style rims. They were fired in a location within the kiln prone to kiln-transformation (yohen), which is noted on the box inscription. As a result, the artist used a deeply carved "i" potter's mark to ensure it would not be obscured by the falling ash. Signed wooden box (double-crosspiece lid)
Diameter 6.9cm x 6.2cm x Height 11.8cm Iwao Kaneshige is the eldest son of Michiaki Kaneshige. Born and raised in a family of Bizen ware artists, he pursued a path in pottery out of his own love for the craft. He polished his techniques under the guidance of the Kaneshige family, became independent in 1995, and held his first solo exhibition at a gallery in Okayama. He participated in the Kaneshige Family Exhibitions in 1999 and 2001.
