Description

This is a slightly earlier Bizen sake cup by Tozo Konishi, a master potter who was born the grandson of the renowned craftsman Toko Konishi and has captured the hearts of many with his unique works backed by solid technique. The cup features a classic Bizen design, and its size and feel in the hand make it exceptionally easy to use. The crisp, well-fired surface shifts from an ash-covered (haikaburi) finish at the rim to a dry, ash-covered texture around the body. Despite the intense heat it has endured, the clay inside remains vibrant, displaying a magnificent quality that looks as though it is still moist and damp even after being fired. Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included
Diameter 6.3cm × Diameter 6.2cm × Height 5.9cm Tozo Konishi is the grandson of the first Toko Konishi. After graduating from university in 1970, he devoted himself to pottery through self-study, was selected for the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition four consecutive times starting in 1971, and became a regular member of the Japan Kogei Association in 1974. He built his kiln in 1975 and held his first firing the following year. He creates vases, tableware, sake vessels, and tea ceremony utensils, expressing the proof of his existence through techniques such as wheel-throwing, hand-building, and slab-building. In 1997, he exhibited at the Bizen Ware Paris Exhibition. He received the Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award in 2003 and has held solo exhibitions in various locations, including Tokyo and Nagoya.
