Description

This Bizen rice bowl is by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Kouriki, a former apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. Unlike his previous bowls, this one uses mountain clay, resulting in a rich, thick finish reminiscent of Ibe-te ware. The interior is generously coated with sesame glaze, while the exterior complements this with a unique, earthy, purplish-black tone created by the iron content of the clay leaching through. The thick firing gives the bowl a remarkably rounded texture, making it an intriguing vessel for whisking matcha at home in the style of a Yamachawan. Paper box
Diameter 13.9cm x Diameter 13.6cm x Height 7.0cm Yoshiteru Kouriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father, who loved ceramics, he aspired to pursue the path of pottery. After graduating from high school in 1989, he studied ceramic techniques under the master Sozan Kaneshige and his son, Yuho Kaneshige. Following a seven-year apprenticeship, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 to strike out on his own, and successfully produced his first firing the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions annually since. In 1999, he was selected for the "Kita no Kashiki" (Northern Confectionery Vessels) Exhibition, and in 2002, he was selected for the "Chanoyu no Zokei" (Forms of Tea Ceremony) Exhibition for the first time.
