Bizen Sake Cup

This is a Bizen sake cup by Kei Fujiwara, a master beloved by all for a warm, open-hearted style that exudes gentleness. The large-scale form of his later years is incredibly powerful and can be called the true essence of "Kei Bizen." It features an orange, matte clay texture that momentarily makes one think of Nanban-yaki, which suits the bold form perfectly. The slightly coarse clay will develop a very rounded texture with continued use, providing enjoyment for many years to come. Keisuke-shiki box (four-way tenon) included
Diameter 7.8cm × Diameter 7.6cm × Height 5.6cm Kei Fujiwara (1899–1983, born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture) entered the world of Bizen ware at the suggestion of Atsuo Masamune, a scholar of Japanese literature living in Honami, Bizen City. He received instruction in wheel-throwing techniques from Baiketsu Mimura, and from 1941, he studied firing methods and refined his ceramic skills under the fellow Living National Treasure, Toyo Kaneshige. Emulating the simplicity and boldness found in the utilitarian wares of the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, he created jars and flower vases with a generous and clear style. The appreciation for art he absorbed in his youth influenced his works. In 1954, he became the second person to be designated a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) for Bizen ware, and in 1958, he became a director of the Japan Kōgei Association. In 1977, the Kei Fujiwara Memorial Museum was established in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture.
