Description

This is an Aobizen (blue Bizen) sake cup by Mitsuhiro Uragami, the heir to the Intangible Cultural Property holder, the late Zenji Uragami, who continues his work while inheriting his exceptional ceramic techniques. He has brilliantly carried on the unique Aobizen style characterized by the subdued gray base and black *tasuki* (cord-like markings) that Zenji Uragami excelled at. He is also highly particular about the presentation of the black *tasuki*; by eschewing thick lines and focusing on a composition of fine lines, the aesthetic created is sharp and complements modern colors. The form, achieved by cutting into a thick-walled, wheel-thrown body, is also very stylish. (Please note that there is a kiln flaw on the interior base, but this does not affect its usability.) Original signed box to follow (please allow some time for shipping)
Diameter 7.2cm × Diameter 7.2cm × Height 5.9cm Mitsuhiro Uragami began his apprenticeship under his father-in-law, Zenji Uragami, in 1973, learning the fundamentals from clay preparation to kiln loading and firing. He established his own studio in 1975. Having studied the Urasenke school of tea ceremony, he frequently creates tea utensils. Influenced by Zenji's mentorship, he has also challenged himself with fine ceramic crafts. He received the Sanyo Shimbun Award at the prefectural exhibition in 1984 and 1986. He has also been a prize winner at the Zento Exhibition, the Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition, and the Yakishime Ceramics Competition. Furthermore, he has held joint exhibitions with his father in Hiroshima and Okayama.
