Description

This is a blue Bizen sake cup by Mitsuhiro Uragami, who inherited the superb ceramic techniques of his father, the late Intangible Cultural Property holder Zenji Uragami. He brilliantly carries on the unique style of blue Bizen, characterized by the subdued gray base and black *tasuki* (cord-mark) patterns that Zenji Uragami excelled at. He is also highly particular about how the black *tasuki* are displayed; avoiding thick lines, the design is composed primarily of fine lines, creating a sharp aesthetic that pairs well with modern colors. The form, achieved by wheel-throwing thick walls and then cutting them, is also very stylish. Signed wooden box to follow (please allow some time for shipping).
Diameter 7.3cm x Diameter 7.0cm x Height 5.9cm Mitsuhiro Uragami began studying under his father-in-law, Zenji Uragami, in 1973, learning the foundations of pottery-making, including clay preparation, kiln loading, and firing. He became independent in 1975. He studies tea ceremony in the Urasenke tradition and frequently creates tea utensils. Influenced by Zenji's mentorship, he also challenges himself with decorative craft pieces. He received the Sanyo Shimbun Award at the prefectural exhibition in 1984 and 1986. He has also received awards at the Zento Exhibition, the Chanoyu Molding Exhibition, and the Yakishime Ceramics Open Competition, among others. Additionally, he has held joint exhibitions with his father in Hiroshima and Okayama.
