Description

This is a new Bizen sake cup by popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, an apprentice of the master Sozan Kaneshige. This latest piece, fired in the spring of 2016, features a superb finish resulting from a highly successful kiln firing. Exposed to intense heat, the piece was fired with such vigor that ash from the firing penetrated the fire-resistant clay applied to protect the scarlet areas. The cup showcases a landscape of "kase-yohen" (matte kiln-transformation)—a blend of ash-covered kiln effects and matte sesame glaze—creating an intriguing contrast between the subtle, ethereal scarlet hues and the bold, ash-dusted scenery. (*Please note in advance that there is some peeling on the rim.) Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.9cm x 6.7cm x Height 5.6cm Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father, who loved pottery, he pursued a career in ceramics. After graduating from high school, he studied pottery techniques under the master Sozan Kaneshige and his son Yuho Kaneshige starting in 1989. After seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 and began his independent career, holding a successful first firing the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Exhibition of Northern Confectionery Vessels I'd Like to Use," and in 2002, he was first selected for the "Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition."
