Description

This is a new Bizen tea cup by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Kouriki, an apprentice of the master Sozan Kaneshige. This latest piece was fired in the spring of 2016 and possesses a deep, nuanced character typical of Kouriki-sensei, who is known for his commitment to high-quality clay. It is a rare piece that was placed in the kiln specifically to encourage kiln transformation, resulting in a magnificent scarlet *yohen* (kiln change) effect that rivals even the finest sake vessels. Although large, it is thinly crafted with a pleasant mouthfeel, making it perfect for both daily use and as a thoughtful gift. Paper box
Diameter 8.6cm × Diameter 8.5cm × Height 9.4cm Yoshiteru Kouriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father’s love for pottery, he pursued a career in ceramics and, after graduating from high school, began his apprenticeship under the master Sozan Kaneshige and his son Yuho in 1989. After seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 and held his first successful firing the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual exhibitions ever since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Kita no Kashiki" (Northern Confectionery Vessels) Exhibition, and in 2002, he was selected for the "Chanoyu no Zokei" (Forms of Tea Ceremony) Exhibition for the first time.
