Description

This is a Kohiki sake cup by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Kouriki, an inner disciple of the master Sozan Kaneshige. The pure white glaze, inherited from Sozan Kaneshige—who himself received instruction in glazed pottery from Munemaro Ishiguro—is magnificent. Although it uses clay from the Bizen region, the character of the clay visible at the foot and the authentic pure white slip make this a truly masterful Kohiki piece. The snow-white slip has a remarkably smooth finish, ensuring that it is as pleasant to use and drink from as it is beautiful to behold. Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 8.3cm × 8.3cm × Height 5.1cm Yoshiteru Kouriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father, who was a pottery enthusiast, he aspired to pursue the path of ceramics. After graduating from high school, he studied pottery techniques under the master Sozan Kaneshige and his son Yuho starting in 1989. After seven years of apprenticeship, he established his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City in 1996 and set out on his own, successfully firing his first kiln the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Exhibition of Northern Confectionery Vessels I'd Like to Use," and in 2002, he was selected for the "Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition" for the first time.
