Description

This is a new *hidasuki* (fire-cord) sake cup by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with an exceptional aesthetic sense who continues to evolve in his handling of clay, firing techniques, and craftsmanship. He has brilliantly mastered the expression of *wabi-sabi* focused on the earthy character of antique Bizen ware, resulting in a piece brimming with highlights that seem to speak to the viewer. While Morimoto’s *hidasuki* displays a wide variety of styles, for this piece he has chosen the austere, unrefined *hidasuki* of folk pottery rather than the prestigious *hidasuki* associated with *daimyo* utensils. Although it is a *hidasuki* piece, the true protagonist remains the clay body; the surface, which looks rugged and coarse, has a surprisingly smooth texture that is incredibly pleasant to the touch. Black *goma* (ash glaze) is also scattered across the interior, bringing further variation to the deeply flavorful *hidasuki* markings.
