Description
This is a vermilion clay sake cup by Toru Ichikawa, who studied under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and made a sensational debut. While one is immediately struck by his highly original, avant-garde design, holding it in your hands reveals the immense passion he pours into expressing the beauty of the clay itself. Creating these beautiful curves and edges requires a deep understanding of the clay's properties, coupled with a staggering amount of time and meticulous effort; it is a work born from forging the clay with single-minded devotion, much like a master swordsmith. Titled "Shudei-sai" (Vermilion Clay Decor), this masterpiece features black and white glazes dancing across a vibrant vermilion clay background. The three colors of red, black, and white evoke a sense of koi carp, resulting in a delightfully whimsical sake cup that reinterprets Japanese modernism through traditional vessels.
