Description
This is a Bizen openwork bowl by Shosuke Baba, the father of the popular artist Takashi Baba, whose work—though understated—possessed a captivating presence. It showcases the ceramic techniques he honed under Zenji Uragami; the openwork technique, prone to warping and cracking, is executed here with incomparable precision using a spatula. A mist-like yellow sesame glaze (kigo-ma) is dusted over the piece as if it were gold powder, creating a picturesque presence that harmonizes with the openwork patterns. The foot is carved into a tripod shape, bearing a heartwarming resemblance to those found on the works of his son, Takashi Baba.
