Description
This is a newly kiln-fired rimmed plate with an amber glaze by Koji Nakahara, a student of Fumio Kawabata who aims to create crafts that suit modern life. The piece is designed to offer both the practicality and stain resistance provided by the amber glaze, and the unique character and evolution through use inherent to Bizen clay. Creating Bizen ware in the heart of Osaka, Mr. Nakahara often draws inspiration from artificial objects such as polyhedra, and this piece similarly features a stylish, sophisticated form within a simple structure. The term "rimmed plate" refers to a plate with a raised edge, and the addition of incised lines here adds variation to the flow of the amber glaze. By applying straw ash glaze over the amber glaze, he has created an ethereal landscape reminiscent of mottled Karatsu ware, where the straw ash glaze appears like flickering flames.
