Description
This is a new Kohiki Pearl Gold-Leaf tea bowl by Toru Ichikawa, who made a striking debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakinuma. It is a highly original and exceptional work that captures the essence of Ichikawa-sensei, who brings his endlessly overflowing ideas to life through clay, the supreme material. In this tea bowl from his new Kohiki Pearl Gold-Leaf series, the shining gold-leaf, with a hue like that of real gold, is unified with a glaze that has the pale, iridescent colors of a genuine pearl, just as the name suggests. The aesthetic of having the gold-leaf applied to the interior and the Kohiki pearl glaze to the exterior gives it a presence reminiscent of makie lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and the combination of gold and pearl exudes a magnificence that transcends the boundaries of pottery. The powerful, hexagonal faceted form gives it a substantial, gold-ingot-like presence in the hand, matching the glaze, and it is truly impressive. (*Please note in advance that there are some traces of glaze boiling on the rim.)
