Description

This is the inaugural Bizen beer tumbler by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who has made his long-awaited debut after studying pottery techniques under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. These new works were produced in the first firing of a tunnel kiln he designed and built himself in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture, which was opened at the end of November. The clean, bright, amber-colored surface achieved through an oxidation-leaning firing, along with the splashed-like sesame glaze, gives the pieces a refined and vibrant quality that makes them wonderful for everyday use. In particular, the way the fine, scattered sesame glaze coats the earthy texture—which transitions from an amber to a brilliant scarlet—is the spitting image of his mentor's work, serving as a testament to his diligent research into clay and kilns. The "do-jime kine-gata" (waisted mortar-shaped) design is not only visually interesting but also ergonomic, and combined with its ideal thickness and weight, it feels perfectly comfortable and stress-free in the hand. The foot and its surrounding area feature an auspicious "left-facing horse" (hidari-uma) stamp to commemorate the first firing. Paper box
