Description
This is a brand new Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln of Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the exact environment in which ancient Bizen pottery was fired. To replicate the style of the ancient Bizen era, he avoids the use of modern refractory bricks, resulting in a kiln where modern common sense regarding thermal efficiency does not apply; consequently, this cup exhibits a superb earthen texture that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches the quality of ancient Bizen. This work features a "koge-goma" (scorched sesame) glaze, a new challenge from this latest firing, with a refined, smooth-textured scorched sesame effect layered over a base of richly fired yellow sesame. Naturally, the underlying earthen texture possesses that cold, withered, ancient Bizen style characteristic of Mr. Soga, offering a moist feel and a refined, austere flavor that will greatly enhance the taste of your sake. When moistened with sake, the scorched sesame and the withered surface take on an even more alluring appearance, embodying the true pleasure of using Bizen ware.
