Description
This is a new Bizen sake flask, fresh from the kiln of Mr. Takashi Soga, who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which ancient Bizen ware was fired. To replicate the style of the ancient Bizen era, he avoids the use of firebricks and other modern materials; consequently, the kiln is fired in a way that defies modern conventions regarding thermal efficiency. Because of this, it achieves a superlative quality of clay that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches the look of ancient Bizen. It features a tea-brown body with understated red fire-cord (hi-dasuki) markings; while at first glance the appearance may seem plain and unassuming, the surface possesses a powerful, vibrant clay texture that feels as though it is bursting with the life force Mr. Soga so admires in ancient Bizen pottery. Notably, a unique feature of this particular firing is the iron content that has erupted like beads of sweat across the entire surface, creating a refined, austere aesthetic that delights the viewer whether the vessel is dry or wet. It is crafted to be remarkably lightweight, making it an ideal companion for slowly enjoying sake while letting the piece develop its patina over time.
