Description

This is a brand new Bizen sake cup, freshly fired from the kiln by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Kouriki, a disciple of the late master Sozan Kaneshige. This particular sake cup is significantly larger than Kouriki-sensei's standard sizes, with a generous capacity of approximately 160ml when filled to the brim. The texture of the piece suggests it will absorb sake well, and the flashes of scarlet "hi-iro" emerging in parts create a refined, understated color palette that gives the overall piece a sophisticated, rustic feel. The craftsmanship has a more rugged finish, showcasing a new facet of Kouriki-sensei's artistry. Signed wooden box (shiho-zan) included.
Diameter 8.3cm x 8.3cm, Height 6.0cm Yoshiteru Kouriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his pottery-loving father, he pursued a career in ceramics. After graduating from high school in 1989, he apprenticed under master Sozan Kaneshige and his son Yuho Kaneshige to learn the craft. Following seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City in 1996 and set out on his own, successfully firing his first kiln the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Pottery for Northern Sweets" exhibition, and in 2002, he was selected for the "Chanoyu Aesthetics" exhibition for the first time.
