Description
This is a slightly earlier Ibe bowl by Iwao Kaneshige, an artist who was born and raised into the prestigious Kaneshige family and crafts his meticulously detailed works using the same kiln fired for generations by his masters, Toyo and Michiaki. It possesses the distinct earthy quality that makes an Iwao piece recognizable at a glance, with a sophisticated aesthetic defined by the minimal "goma" (ash glaze) he prefers during firing and a sunset-orange clay tone. The way the "kase-goma" (dry, crusty ash glaze) sprinkled around the rim transitions into the orange clay body evokes a nostalgic feeling, reminiscent of sunsets witnessed in childhood. Please note that the firing around the base is quite soft, meaning it is not suitable for foods with liquid as it may seep through. (Though an earlier work, this piece is unused.)
