Description
This is a new colored Bizen sake cup by Anjin Abe, an artist who possesses deep insight and an aesthetic sense for antique pottery, and who creates one-of-a-kind works through his original research and firing techniques. Against a backdrop of vivid gold, a magnificent Blue Fuji is depicted in a powerful composition, with the snow-capped peak rendered in smooth white, making the piece remarkably colorful. The moon shining on the side is painted in a brilliant red, and this auspicious scene is masterfully captured with a stylish and bold touch. On the back, there is an amusing illustration of a grasshopper, with vivid red accents on its eyes. The sides and the interior are covered in thick, rich yellow sesame glaze (kigoma), showcasing the firing technique that has long impressed fans of antique Bizen, making it a delight to view from every angle.

Diameter 6.6cm x Diameter 5.7cm x Height 5.8cm Anjin Abe was originally a Western-style painter. He began collecting pottery as a hobby, but finding contemporary Bizen wares lacking, he began his own pottery practice in 1972 to create pieces that satisfied his own standards. He frequently creates water jars (mizusashi), flower vases (hana-ire), flattened bottles (henko), bowls, sake bottles (tokkuri), and sake cups. All pieces are wheel-thrown and finished with a spatula. He bases his pottery on Momoyama-period antique Bizen, with a particular focus on his firing process. He is also engaged in diverse creative activities, exhibiting works (mixed media) that combine various materials and techniques such as ceramics, lacquer, oil painting, and bronze. He holds solo exhibitions energetically both in Japan and internationally, in cities including Tokyo, Osaka, New York, and Paris.
