Description

This Bizen plate is by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, a former live-in apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. It is a piece that captures the lively expression of clay characteristic of Koriki-sensei, who was mentored by the father-and-son team of Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige and was taught the secret techniques of clay preparation rooted in the Kaneshige school. It is a somewhat large, practical plate, yet it is surprisingly light in weight—a testament to Koriki-sensei’s skillful wheel work, which one can easily picture as he shapes the clay. The rim is firmly raised, making it suitable for dishes with some liquid. To prevent staining and enhance the beauty of the scarlet *hiiro* markings, we recommend wetting the plate slightly before use, which adds to the visual enjoyment of the piece. Paper box
Diameter 27.4cm x 27.2cm x Height 3.9cm Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father, who loved pottery, he pursued a career in ceramics. After graduating from high school in 1989, he studied under the father-and-son team of Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige to learn the techniques of the craft. After seven years of training, he established his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996, and successfully fired his first kiln the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Exhibition of Sweets Bowls from the North That I Want to Use," and in 2002, he was selected for the "Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition" for the first time.
