Description

This is a Hi-dasuki (fire-cord) plate by Yoshiteru Koriki, a popular young artist who was an apprentice to the late master Sozan Kaneshige. The work offers a glimpse into the vibrant expression of the clay, characteristic of Koriki-sensei, who was mentored by the father-and-son team of Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige and entrusted with the secret techniques of clay preparation rooted in the Kaneshige school. Having thoroughly mastered the Sozan style of electric kiln firing, he keeps in mind the philosophy of "nurturing the clay in the kiln," just as with a wood-fired climbing kiln, and spends over a week carefully firing his pieces. Consequently, the surface is remarkably soft and fresh, completing the piece as pottery without destroying the life that dwells within the clay. The color of the Hi-dasuki is vivid yet possess a refined, moderate redness, creating a magnificent contrast between the scarlet and mugwort-like hues reminiscent of Sozan-sensei's work. Paper box
