Description
This is a Shino gold-decorated sake cup by Toru Ichikawa, who made a stunning debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is an exceptional work, full of originality, that perfectly captures Ichikawa’s style of shaping his endless flow of ideas through the supreme medium of clay. While Ichikawa attracts attention for his creative designs, he skillfully incorporates traditional Shino pottery techniques into them. He boldly pours madder-colored Shino feldspar glaze, and the areas of exposed clay created by the splashing glaze reveal a matte gold decoration adjusted to complement the Shino. This gold decoration is paired with the Shino glaze in terms of texture as well, and the characteristics of the soft, voluminous feldspar glaze match perfectly with the characteristics of the gold decoration that retains the texture of the clay.
