Description

This is a new *shumen* (sake cup) titled "Oiran гейша," just out of the kiln by Toru Ichikawa, who made a striking debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is an exceptionally creative work that truly embodies Ichikawa’s style of shaping his boundless stream of ideas through the supreme medium of clay. The title combines "Oiran" (courtesan) with "гейша" (the Russian word for geisha), reflecting a gorgeous and flamboyant world created by layering glazes over gold and platinum accents. A soft, marbled crimson glaze is applied over the gold leaf, while a celadon glaze is applied over the platinum, creating a painterly composition that resembles a piece of woven fabric. The way the glazes are applied, as if dressing in multiple layers, is fascinating and fitting for the title, evoking a geisha adorned in elaborate attire. The black glaze, which has cracked into a fine and intense *kairagi* (plum blossom skin) texture, beautifully accentuates the delicate hues of the gold and platinum sections. Signed wooden box to be provided later (please allow some time for shipping).
Diameter 6.7cm x Diameter 6.3cm x Height 7.4cm Toru Ichikawa was born in Tokyo. He began his apprenticeship under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in June 2011 and became independent in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, in January 2015.
