Description

This is a newly kiln-fired sake cup, "Oiran гейша (Geisha)," by Toru Ichikawa, who made a striking debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a highly original and exceptional piece, characteristic of Ichikawa-sensei, who gives shape to his endlessly overflowing ideas through the supreme medium of clay. In addition to "Oiran," the title includes "гейша," the Russian word for Geisha, expressing a magnificent and resplendent world created by layering glazes over gold and platinum gilding. By applying a pale glaze over the gold gilding, he has succeeded in drawing out a mysterious, iridescent hue. On the front, a pale yellow sits atop the gold gilding, while the interior features a pale crimson. This style of glazing, which is as if the piece is wearing multiple layers of glaze like garments, is fascinating and truly fitting for the title, reminiscent of a Geisha dressed in flamboyant attire. The black glaze, with its fine, intense *kairagi* (plum blossom crackle) texture, beautifully accentuates the delicately colored gilded sections. (*As shown in photo 7, it appears pale yellow under natural light.) Signed box to be provided at a later date (please allow some time for shipping)
