Description

This is "Céladon №6," a freshly fired tea bowl by Toru Ichikawa, an artist who made a striking debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is an exceptionally creative work that embodies Ichikawa’s signature style of giving form to his endless stream of ideas through the supreme medium of clay. True to its title, "Céladon," the French word for celadon, the work uses a cool, summer-appropriate celadon glaze to express a fresh new worldview. The celadon glaze, edged with gold leaf, features fine crackle patterns that possess an icy beauty, boasting a high degree of perfection characteristic of Ichikawa’s dedicated glaze research. Complementing the celadon is a matte black glaze that grounds the entire piece, while the mirror-like gold accents placed here and there create a contrast with the two in terms of brilliance. This tripartite interplay of celadon, black glaze, and gold leaf creates a dizzying array of changing landscapes across the work. Signed box to follow later (please allow some time for shipping).
