Description
This is a newly kiln-fired sake cup, "Céladon №3," by Toru Ichikawa, who studied under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and made a striking debut. It is an exceptionally creative work, true to Mr. Ichikawa's style of giving form to his endless stream of ideas through the supreme medium of clay. As the title "Céladon"—the French word for celadon—suggests, the piece utilizes a refreshingly cool celadon glaze perfect for summer, expressing a whole new worldview. The celadon glaze, edged with gold leaf, features fine crackles that possess an ice-like beauty, boasting a high degree of perfection characteristic of Mr. Ichikawa, who is deeply committed to glaze research. The contrasting black Kagutsuchi glaze emits a subtle luster, its molten iron-like presence accentuating the beauty and coolness of the celadon glaze. As this is "№3," the celadon glaze has greater transparency, allowing the underlying platinum glaze to shine through, while the thicker areas form a landscape of crackles with remarkable depth.
