Description
This is a new sake cup by Toru Ichikawa, who studied under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and made a striking debut. Entitled "will - New Oiran Geisha," this piece is exceptionally creative and characteristic of Ichikawa, whose endless stream of ideas takes shape through the supreme medium of clay. It is a new version of his Oiran series, which features a profound and deep glaze texture, achieved by layering glazes as if dressing in a gorgeous kimono. This iteration is based on vibrant gold leaf, with complex, overlapping layers of orange and yellow glaze that create a richness of color reminiscent of an oil painting. The ratio and composition of the orange and yellow change across every part—the interior, the rim, and the exterior—embodying infinite variations that, much like an actual oil painting, invite one to gaze at it endlessly. The black glazed sections have lost their luster like scorched charcoal, and when combined with the gold and other glazes, they create a majestic scene as if beautiful gold is emerging from cooling, solidified lava.
