Description
This is a Bizen sake cup by Kosuke Yashiro, an artist who spent his formative years dreaming of working with Bizen ware in the town of Imbe, and who finally debuted after fulfilling his lifelong ambition of building his own kiln there. It is a piece of Bizen ware that strikes true, reflecting Yashiro-sensei’s dedication to making Bizen his life’s work, inspired by the countless potters who were born, raised, and passed away in Imbe. The "haikaburi" (ash-covered) kiln transformation—a star technique of Bizen—is masterfully executed, in line with Yashiro-sensei’s bold assertion that there is deep significance in creating Bizen ware within the climate of Imbe itself. The cup was built up by slowly joining the clay, incorporating mountain soil; the seemingly hesitant flow of the clay imparts a profound sense of wabi-sabi. Both the interior and exterior feature a scarlet hue with a slightly yellowish tint, brought out by the mountain soil acting as a perfect accent.
