Description
This is a sake cup titled "Céladon №5" by Toru Ichikawa, who studied under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and made a striking debut. True to Ichikawa’s style of shaping his boundless ideas through the supreme medium of clay, this is an exceptionally creative and groundbreaking piece. As the title "Céladon"—the French word for celadon—suggests, the work uses a cool, summer-like celadon glaze to express a new world view. The celadon glaze, edged with gold leaf, features fine crackles that possess an icy beauty, boasting the high level of perfection one expects from an artist so dedicated to glaze research. The contrasting black Kagutsuchi glaze emits a moderate luster and, with a presence reminiscent of molten iron, enhances the beauty and coolness of the celadon glaze. Being slightly taller than others in Ichikawa's sake cup series, it has the atmosphere of a shot glass and would also suit Western spirits.
