Description

This Bizen-yaki katakuchi bowl is the debut work of Kosuke Yashiro, an artist who spent his formative years working as an apprentice in Ibe with the dream of one day creating his own Bizen ware, finally achieving his long-held ambition by building his own kiln in that very place. It is a quintessential Bizen piece that reflects the dedication of Yashiro, who was born and raised in Ibe and became captivated by the works of the many potters who lived and died there, ultimately committing his life to the craft. The yellow sesame glaze (kigoma) evokes the sound of pine resin crackling in a wood-fired kiln, perfectly complemented by the dense, metallic-fired, deep perilla-colored clay, resulting in a delicate and elegant character that can only be achieved through a climbing kiln. Initially intended as a sake vessel, the shape of the spout led to its final form as tableware, and as a result, it is exceptionally well-crafted. The subtle fingertip marks pressed into the piece reveal how the clay was slowly and patiently raised, a process that softened the edges and gave the work its rounded, gentle presence. With its charming spout design, this is a wonderful piece that will enliven your dining table while introducing you to the true joys of Bizen tableware. Paper box
