Description
This is a Bizen katakuchi (spouted bowl) by Kosuke Yashiro, an artist who spent his apprenticeship years dreaming of working with Bizen ware in Imbe, finally realizing his long-held ambition of building his own kiln there to make his debut. It is a quintessential Bizen piece that reflects the dedication of Yashiro-sensei, who was born and raised in Imbe, fell in love with the works of the many potters who lived and died there, and committed his life to Bizen ware. The sophisticated, greenish-tinged *kase-goma* (dry sesame glaze) combines with an exquisite clay body that transitions in color from orange to *shiso* (perilla-red), creating the delicate and graceful aesthetic that can only be achieved in a wood-fired climbing kiln. While originally intended as a sake vessel, the shape of the spout led him to finish it as a tableware piece, resulting in an exceptionally well-crafted item. The faint, scattered fingertip impressions on the surface reveal that the clay was built up slowly and deliberately, a process that softens the edges of the piece and gives it a rounded, gentle presence. With its charming spout design, this is a wonderful piece that brings life to the dining table while introducing the joys of Bizen tableware.
