Description

This is "Céladon №3," a *kiritate* (cylindrical) vessel by Toru Ichikawa, who made a striking debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a highly original and exceptional piece, characteristic of Mr. Ichikawa, who gives shape to his endlessly overflowing ideas through the supreme medium of clay. True to its title, "Céladon"—the French word for celadon—it uses a cool, refreshing celadon glaze that befits the summer season, expressing an entirely new worldview. The celadon glaze, edged in gold, features fine crazing that has the beauty of ice, boasting a high degree of perfection that reflects Mr. Ichikawa’s dedicated research into glazes. The contrasting black *Kagutsuchi* glaze emits a subtle luster, its presence resembling molten iron, which accentuates the beauty and coolness of the celadon glaze. As this is "№3," the celadon glaze has greater transparency, allowing the platinum-painted base to show through, while the thicker areas create a highly three-dimensional landscape through the crazing. The piece is titled *kiritate*, another name for a cylindrical *mukozuke* (side-dish bowl); as it is lightweight and easy to handle, it can be used not only as a *mukozuke* but also as a small beer glass or teacup. Furthermore, this work comes with a custom-made saucer of the same design, allowing them to be used as a set. Signed wooden box (drop-lid)
Kiritate: 6.7cm diameter × 6.6cm diameter × 8.2cm height
Saucer: 12.0cm diameter × 11.5cm diameter × 1.0cm height Toru Ichikawa was born in Tokyo. He began his apprenticeship under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in June 2011 and became independent in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, in January 2015.
