Description
This is Toru Ichikawa's sake cup "Shuten-will-Champagne Gold 'Oiran гейша'," created after he studied under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and made a striking debut. It is an exceptionally creative work that embodies Ichikawa's signature style of giving shape to his inexhaustible flow of ideas through clay, the ultimate medium. In addition to "Oiran," the title includes the Russian word "гейша" (geisha), expressing a magnificent, flamboyant world where gold and platinum leaf are layered with glazes. By applying a pale glaze over the gold leaf, he has succeeded in drawing out mysterious, iridescent hues. The cream-yellow layered over the platinum leaf creates a finish that is both three-dimensional and deep, yet pale and delicate in its coloration. The glazing technique, which resembles dressing in multiple layers of garments, is fascinating and aptly reflects the title, evoking a geisha adorned in elaborate costumes. The black glaze, with its intricate and intense *kai-ragi* (plum blossom crackle) texture, perfectly accentuates the delicately colored gold leaf sections.
