Description
This is the latest sake cup, "Shumeigiku" (Japanese Anemone), freshly taken from the kiln by Toru Ichikawa, who made a brilliant debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a highly original and exceptional work that embodies Mr. Ichikawa’s style of shaping his boundless ideas through clay, the supreme medium. As a new work for the autumn season, it bears the name of the autumn flower, the Japanese Anemone, and features white glaze with yellow glaze drizzled over it, evoking the white petals and yellow stamens of the flower. The base clay used is red, creating a complex color palette where the white glaze appears milky where thick and allows the red clay to show through where thin. The gold and platinum leaf decorations are also applied with exquisite, meticulous care; surrounding the yellow glaze or dotted like tiny grains, they are characteristic of Mr. Ichikawa’s style. The white glaze itself is left without a clear top coat, resulting in a voluminous, textured finish with a slightly rough feel that reveals the bubbling of the glaze.
