Description

This is "New Oiran (Geisha)," a new sake cup by Toru Ichikawa, who made a striking debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is an exceptionally creative work that showcases Ichikawa's signature style of giving shape to his endlessly overflowing ideas through the supreme medium of clay. This is the latest version of his Oiran series, which features a profound and deep glaze texture achieved by layering glazes as if dressing in a gorgeous kimono. This piece uses a vibrant gold glaze as a base, with a yellow glaze layered over it, resulting in a rich coloration reminiscent of an oil painting. The vigorously poured yellow glaze changes in intensity, creating a rich variety of textures, from thin, streaky areas to thick pools of glaze. The black glazed sections have lost their luster, looking like charred charcoal; combined with the gold and other glazes, they create a majestic scene as if beautiful gold is emerging from cooling, solidified lava.
