Description

This is a brand new Bizen square plate, freshly taken from the kiln by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Kōriki, an apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. Fired at the end of September 2017, this latest piece exhibits the consistent quality characteristic of Kōriki-sensei, while serving as an excellent work with rich variety. The dignified clay texture inherited from Sozan Kaneshige may appear understated at first glance, but it is of an exceptionally high quality that clearly demonstrates what sets superior clay apart from the rest. Reflecting Kōriki-sensei's deep interest not only in pottery but also in tea ceremony, calligraphy, painting, and cuisine, this wonderful piece successfully balances design and usability while highlighting the unique appeal of Bizen ware. It was designed with the intention of serving about ten pieces of sushi, but it can be used for a wide variety of dishes beyond just sushi. While showcasing the quality of the clay, the artist has used his ingenuity to avoid making the dish overly conspicuous, such as by creating faint, hazy circular patterns or softening the contrast. It has been made with a slightly thicker build to prevent breakage, making it sturdy and suitable for everyday use without hesitation. Paper box
Diameter 28.8cm x 20.8cm x Height 1.5cm Yoshiteru Kōriki was born in Akō City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father, who was a pottery enthusiast, he aspired to pursue the path of ceramics. After graduating from high school in 1989, he studied ceramic techniques under master Sozan Kaneshige and his son, Yūhō Kaneshige. Following seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 to strike out on his own, and successfully held his first firing the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, he was selected for the "Northland Confectionery Vessels Exhibition" (Tsukatte mitai Kita no Kashiki-ten), and in 2002, he was selected for the "Chanoyu Modeling Exhibition" for the first time.
