Description
This is "Consciousness," a new sake flask by Toru Ichikawa, who made a stunning debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a highly original and exceptional piece, embodying the work of an artist who gives shape to his ceaseless flow of ideas through the supreme medium of clay. The title, "Consciousness," is truly philosophical, as is typical of Ichikawa-sensei. The contrast between the matte black glaze, which looks as if molten copper has been poured over it, and the vivid red clay body is remarkably striking. Gold and platinum accents are applied with a soft, flowing quality, like drifting consciousness, further reflecting the theme of the piece. The highlight of this new work is the Taiji (Yin-Yang) symbol embedded around the midsection.
