Description
This is the Sake Cup S-"Premium Edition" by Toru Ichikawa, who made a striking debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a highly original and exceptional piece that reflects the style of Ichikawa, who shapes his endless stream of ideas through the supreme medium of clay. As a special work even among his Shino-style pieces, it is titled S-Premium Edition, taking the "S" from "SHINO." It achieves a harmony between the inherent interest of the intensely scorched feldspar glaze and the intrigue of the ceramic process, where the red clay body shows through to create a pink-toned glaze. It is also an ambitious work created through an extremely unconventional firing process, in which the gas kiln was opened during firing, and the artist, wearing a firefighter's suit, applied ash glaze directly to the piece inside. The ash glaze from that moment adheres to the front of the work like a melted gold nugget.
