Description

This is a newly fired Bizen sake cup by Shin Nakamura, a renowned creator of sake vessels and tableware and the eldest son of the late master Rokuro Nakamura, a pride of Bizen pottery. This piece was deeply fired while buried in embers at the back of the kiln, resulting in a magnificent "kuro-agari" (blackened) ash-glazed "yohen" (kiln-transmutation) effect that is fired to a crisp. At the same time, it retains the vivid "hi-iro" (scarlet) that seems to emanate from the very core of the clay—a hallmark of the Nakamura family—creating a superb contrast of black and scarlet that will prove irresistible to any sake lover. The interior of the cup is also bathed in the signature Nakamura scarlet, which changes to an even more beautiful hue when moistened with sake, tempting one to drink perhaps a little too much. Despite its large, powerful form, the walls are not overly thick, giving it a surprisingly comfortable weight in the hand that belies its dynamic appearance. Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included
Diameter 7.4cm × 7.3cm × Height 4.9cm Shin Nakamura was born as the eldest son of Rokuro Nakamura. He began his training under his father in 1971, diligently honing his skills from the basics. To learn the firing techniques of Living National Treasure Toyo Kaneshige, he spent ten years assisting with and receiving instruction from Michiaki Kaneshige during his kiln firings. He became independent in 1975. He focuses on tea ceramics and tableware, while also creating flower vases, sake bottles, and sake cups. He is actively involved in holding solo exhibitions across Japan, including in Tokyo, Okayama, and Nagoya.
