Description

This is a slightly older Bizen sake cup by Nakamura Shin, a renowned maker of sake vessels and tableware and the eldest son of the late Bizen pottery master Rokuro Nakamura. It is a flat-style cup (hirahai) that is highly regarded among sake enthusiasts for making sake taste delicious. The rim, neither too thin nor too thick, has a comfortable thickness and curves slightly inward; combined with the undulating form, it fits the lips well and, owing to the flat design, also helps prevent spills. The interior features ash-covering (haikaburi), while the exterior displays deep green "kase" (dry/matte) sesame glaze, resulting in what is commonly referred to as a "kase-yohen" firing. The clay body, fired to a firm hardness, has a calm shiso-red color, which, together with the kase-yohen effect, gives the piece an overall refined and understated presence. (*Please note that as this is an older work, there are slight signs of use, though no stains.) Original signed wooden box (shihozan)
Diameter 8.7cm x Diameter 8.6cm x Height 3.5cm Born as the eldest son of Rokuro Nakamura, Shin Nakamura began learning the basics under his father in 1971 and honed his skills. To further study the firing techniques of Living National Treasure Toyo Kaneshige, he assisted in the kiln firings of Michiaki Kaneshige for ten years, receiving his guidance. He subsequently went independent in 1975. He focuses mainly on tea ceramics and tableware, while also creating flower vases, sake bottles, and sake cups. He actively holds solo exhibitions across Japan, including in Tokyo, Okayama, and Nagoya.
