Description

This is a new Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln this June by Takashi Soga, who challenges the beauty of the past by recreating the same environment in which ancient Bizen pottery was fired. To replicate the style of the Old Bizen period, he avoids the use of firebricks and other modern conveniences; consequently, the kiln is fired in a way that defies all modern common sense regarding internal thermal efficiency. Because of this, the piece achieves a superlative quality of clay texture that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches the appearance of true Old Bizen. The base clay, with its reddish-brown hue, features iron deposits and fine stone inclusions, giving it a flavor so authentic it could be mistaken for an antique. Added to this is a deeply fired, carmine-colored *hidasuki* (fire-cord) pattern, with gold accents applied only to the *hidasuki*. These accents integrate seamlessly into the clay surface while catching the light to reveal the hidden fire-cord markings, creating a sophisticated and understated aesthetic. It is a fascinating work that fulfills the dream of using an Old Bizen sake cup. Signed wooden box to follow (please allow some time for delivery)
