Description

This is a new Bizen sake cup, freshly fired from the kiln by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, a former live-in apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. This latest piece, from an early summer 2018 firing, features a fascinating contrast between the intense, carbonized "hai-kaburi" (ash-covered) kiln transformation in black-silver and the vibrant orange hue of the fired clay. While the cup is characterized by its intense firing, centered on the black-silver kiln transformation, the base clay is a remarkably vivid orange, creating a great variety of scenery; the kiln transformation shifts unexpectedly into matte or "nuke" (clear patches) effects, making every angle of the cup a pleasure to behold. The interior features a charming "maru-nuke" (circular patch), a signature touch of Koriki-sensei. Signed wooden box to follow at a later date (please allow some time for delivery).
Diameter 7.0cm x Diameter 6.9cm x Height 6.3cm Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father, who loved ceramics, he aspired to pursue the path of pottery, and after graduating from high school in 1989, he apprenticed under the master Sozan Kaneshige and his son Yuho to learn the craft. After seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to strike out on his own in 1996, successfully completing his first firing the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since. In 1999, he was selected for the "Sweets Containers of the North I'd Like to Use" exhibition, and in 2002, he was selected for the "Forms of Tea Ceremony" exhibition for the first time.
