Description
This is a newly fired Bizen *hidasuki* (fire-cord) sake flask by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, a former apprentice to the late master Sozan Kaneshige. This latest piece, fired in early summer 2018, features an incredibly elegant *hidasuki* pattern reminiscent of the masterpieces of his teacher, Sozan Kaneshige. Fired in a custom-built electric kiln capable of wood-firing temperatures, it was fired for the same duration as an *anagama* climbing kiln, resulting in a moist texture and a rich *hidasuki* coloration that seems to permeate the very core of the clay, demonstrating how he has faithfully inherited his master's techniques. The application of the *hidasuki* is truly exquisite; while over-application can appear garish and under-application mundane, he masterfully expresses the beauty of the *hidasuki* itself through lines and planes, while successfully avoiding any sense of artificiality that can arise from human intervention. The rim has the delicate charm of a maiden applying rouge, making this a tour de force that stands clearly apart from crude straw-fired works.
