Description

This is an Ibe sake cup by Anjin Abe, a master who creates one-of-a-kind works through unique research and firing techniques, driven by his profound insight into ancient ceramics and refined aesthetic sense. The sake cup features a tea-bowl-style form, combining a thick, well-melted yellow sesame glaze with a sophisticated Ibe-style texture. The Ibe technique, which involves applying a different type of clay as a slip to achieve deep coloration, is further enhanced here by Abe's masterful firing techniques, resulting in a complex and magnificent surface—reminiscent of reddish-brown leather or aged ironware. The characteristic sesame glaze of ancient Bizen ware is brilliantly recreated; this unique, rich, and slightly whitish-hued glaze possesses a depth that sets it apart at first glance. The piece is finished with a playful touch, featuring decorative elements such as trellis and plum patterns. Original wooden box (Shiho-san, double-boxed)
Diameter 6.6cm x Diameter 6.3cm x Height 4.3cm Anjin Abe was originally a Western-style painter. After collecting ceramics as a hobby, he found contemporary Bizen ware lacking and began his career in pottery in 1972 to create pieces that satisfied his own standards. He frequently creates water jars, flower vases, flat jars, bowls, sake bottles, and sake cups, all of which are wheel-thrown and finished with a spatula. His pottery is grounded in the ancient Bizen style of the Momoyama period, with a meticulous focus on firing. He is also involved in diverse forms of artistic expression, presenting "mixed media" works that combine various materials and techniques, such as ceramics, lacquer, oil painting, and bronze. He holds solo exhibitions energetically both in Japan and internationally, including in Tokyo, Osaka, New York, and Paris.
